In the light of the strategic goal of Europe for the year 2010, which was set by the heads of the states at the Summit of Lisbon in March 2000, and the more specific goal for the promotion and adaptation of CSR, in October 2004 the European Multi-Stakeholder Forum (EMSF) was set up for further discussion, consultation and presentation to the EU as a suggestion for the promotion of innovation, transparency and the convegence of CSR tools and practices.
The Forum had a membership of employers' organisations, business groups, trade unions and Non Governmental Organisations (NGOs) who participated in f our theme based Round Tables, each one meeting three times:
1. Improving knowledge about CSR and facilitating the exchange of experience and good practice;
2. Fostering CSR among SMEs;
3. Diversity, convergence and transparency of CSR practices and tools;
4. Development aspects of CSR
After the completion of the discussion, the conclusions and the suggestions of these Four Round Tables were presented to the EU on the 29 th June of 2004.
